Death Race 2050 is direct to video sequel to the 1975 action movie Death Race 2000. A low budget B-movie with no big stars yet 2000 became a cult classic. Probably due to the black comedy and campy mayhem. And if the trailer is any indication, Death Race 2050 is probably more of the same.

Death Race’s setting is a bleak future America (the far future of the year 2000). A lot seems to have changed in the 50 years since the first movie. As cbr.com puts it.
“The original โDeath Race 2000โ imagined an America, and much of the world, ruled by the fascist Mr. President who had long ago instituted the death race sport as a media spectacle and national morale booster. โDeath Race 2050โ looks to change up the structure established by the original film somewhat, replacing Mr. President with The Chairman (Malcolm McDowell), and the United States of America with the United Corporations of America.”
2050 isn’t the first time the franchise has been dusted off in recent years. 2008 saw ‘Death Race’, the most noteworthy thing about it being Jason Statham in the starring role. It dropped the camp humor for a darker, edgier tone, as a result, it wasn’t too great. Therefore, bringing back director Roger Corman makes 2050 a return to form. Furthermore, 2050 is a sequel instead of a reboot.
The goal of Death Race isn’t crossing the line first, however. First of all, you must survive to the end and race your score by running down pedestrians. Hence, the black comedy label.
Death Race 2050 seems like the sequel the fans have been waiting for. Finally, 2050 releases to DVD, BluRay and digital platforms January 17th, 2017.
