2024’s release schedule is slowly being expanded after the end of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Lionsgate and Blumhouse have released the trailer for Imaginary, which follows DeWanda Wise (Jurassic World: Dominion) and her family as they are terrorized by a stuffed bear and other creepy entities.
The trailer follows Jessica as she moves back into her childhood home with her stepdaughter, Alice (Pyper Braun). Soon, things start to feel wrong. Alice befriends an imaginary friend embodied in a stuffed bear. When the bear begins to play painful games with Alice, Jessica finds out that her abandoned imaginary friend is hurt and wants payback for her leaving.
The two leads are joined by Betty Buckley (Preacher), Tom Payne (The Walking Dead), Veronica Falcón (Queen of the South), Dane DiLiegro (Prey), Taegen Burns (The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers), and Matthew Sato (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series).
Imaginary Trailer: DeWanda Wise Faces Her Abandoned Imaginary Friend
The 2024 horror film was directed by Jeff Wadlow (Are You Afraid of the Dark?). He co-wrote the script with Greb Erb and Jason Oremland. Erb and Oremland have worked together to pen the TV special Reindeer in Here.
This is the first official trailer of Imaginary. The teaser played in theaters before Five Nights at Freddy’s, which is currently dominating the box office. Now, we have a broader look at the scares, entities, and the story of this family.
The last few years have seen a new level of success for horror movies. 2017 was the only year before the pandemic in which the genre surpassed the overall market share of other genres in the industry. Since 2020, horror has been well above the rest of the industry by at least 10%. This year alone has been the best-performing year since 2018, thanks to hits like Five Nights ($255 million), Scream VI ($108 million), and M3GAN ($98 million).
Imaginary is all set to jump out and spook viewers in theaters on March 8.
