Baldur’s Gate 3 is a gift that keeps on giving, especially with Patch 5. Now, there’s a new game difficulty; Baldur’s Gate 3 Honour Mode is the highest honor you can achieve in the RPG. If you manage to finish the game in Honour Mode, you get a new special dice skin (a golden D20), which is practically an elite club badge from Larian Studios.

If you want that skin, it’s best to understand how Baldur’s Gate 3 Honour Mode works and we’ll also give you some tips on how to overcome this brutal difficulty.

It’s now Baldur’s Gate 3’s hardest difficulty (which was previously just Tactician), but there’s more to it in terms of limitations. Here are some key differences compared to Tactician Mode:

  • Single save file only (lessens or eliminates save-scumming)
  • Higher enemy HP
  • Bosses get new and unique actions and abilities
  • Limited actions for players in higher levels
  • Higher enemy hit chance
  • Stronger enemy equipment
  • Stronger enemy spells
  • More advanced enemy tactics
  • Higher trader prices when you’re buying (and lower trader prices when you’re selling)

All that for a new look of your die. Of course, you also get the honor of finishing the game in its most unforgiving state. To get you ready, we have some brief tips to help you overcome Baldur’s Gate 3 Honour Mode.

By the way, you’ll need to start a New Game as Honour Mode isn’t available on older save files. It’s not an ideal difficulty for beginners.

Keep these tips in mind on your ongoing Honour Mode playthrough or if you’re planning to start another one.

  1. Memorize all encounters first – Essentially, don’t play Baldur’s Gate 3 Honour Mode on your first playthrough since you have to know what’s ahead to be ready.
  2. Always ambush if possible – This means ambushing enemies. Because whoever surprises the enemies practically gets two free turns of attacks. That could easily end fights prematurely in your favor. You can abuse Invisibility to achieve this consistently.
  3. Get the Alert Feat for all characters – Consequently, getting ambushed or surprised can result in a total party kill or wipe. You wouldn’t want a taste of your own medicine now, do you?
  4. Get ready to own your mistakes – Assume that you can’t save (even if you can) so you can include failure or bad luck in your encounters or checks.
  5. Retreat – You don’t have to win all encounters, that’s why you should know all encounters beforehand.

Bear in mind that you can’t change difficulty once you’ve started a game in Honour Mode. There’s no turning back this time.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for PC and PlayStation 5.
