The modern video game industry is dominated by AAA giants that employ multiple studios, with hundreds of staff each to work massive set pieces of video games and are able to pump them out at an alarming pace. As a means of standing out, Indie studios have begun to create short, artistic endeavors that focus on unique visuals and play styles, creating a game like Candle Man.
Originally announced by Spotlight Interactive in 2013, the game seems to have been overhauled with updated graphics in the three years since its first trailer. The company, based out of Beijing, states it is dedicated to creating innovative games, which provide unique experiences and meaningful insights.

That creativity can be seen on display in the games art style, as Candle Man creates captivating environment focused around the illumination of dark areas. Filled with an array of lively colors and creatures, the vivid surroundings elicit an emotional resonance similar to the first time playing Journey and being shocked by it’s beauty and unique gameplay.
The puzzle platformer puts players in the wicks of a candle trying to reach the end of the level without burning out or falling to the obstacles throughout the level. Each candle wick lasts ten seconds total, so the choice of when to illuminate the dark dungeons will be critical given a specific window of flame to work within.
Alongside lighting up the dark environment, the environment seems to react to the light, thus changing the dynamic of the map in important ways. The trailer shows a glowing plant-like substance that folds and unfolds dependent upon whether Candle Man has lit his flame.
Perspective is another mechanic that will play heavily into navigating the games treacherous terrain. The trailer shows multiple different angles – top down, side and straight on – and it is unknown whether they are within the player’s control or not.
No release date has been announced yet, but it will be interesting to see how the game plays when it is released. Will it illuminate the shadow cast upon it by the larger video game studios, or will it wither away into a mass of melted wax? Be sure to check back to The Nerd Stash for more information!
