Since it’s revitalization in 2011, DC Entertainment has been partnering with Warner Bros. Home Animation to create gritty standalone animated movies. The latest installment in the animated series will explore the dark side (no not Darkseid) of the Justice League, in Justice League Dark.
Hidden amongst a laundry list of formulaic tv shows and big budget movies, the animated movies have been a breath of fresh air. The straight to DVD movies seem to have allowed writers and directors to stay true to the comic they are adaptations of, while simultaneously allowing for more creativity given the animated format.
A lot of that is as a result of the new 52 publishing initiative, which introduced new groups like the Justice League Dark, a team made up of paranormal outcasts. Matt Ryan reprises his NBC series role as the voice of Constantine and is joined by Nicholas Turturro (Deadman), Ray Chase (Jason Blood/Etrigan), Camilla Luddington (Zatanna), Jerry O’Connell (Superman), Rosario Dawson (Wonder Woman), Jason O’Mara and many more new and recurring voice talent from previous films.
The trailer reveals the Justice League facing an unknown demon threat wreaking metal havoc on the civilian populace. The magic nature of these demons causes them to seek help from the supernatural cast of heroes.

As indicated by the title, the film will not be the campy romp that fans of previous animated television and movie series set in the DC universe grew up watching. Justice League Dark will be rated “R” upon release, only the second in the series to do so, the first being its predecessor The Killing Joke.
The film is directed by Jay Oliva (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns) and written J.M. DeMatteis and Ernie Altbacker (Green Lantern: The Animated Series). Justice League Dark will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital in early 2017.
