While traveling around during Chapter 1 of Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, you are alerted by Vox Master Vigdis. This is a random event but it signals the Dark Echelons companion quest for Abelard. You cannot avoid it but thankfully it doesn’t involve combat. However, there are several ways to complete the quest and not all of them are bloodless. What is the best way to complete Dark Echelons in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader and how do you get there?

When you respond to Vox Master Vigdis’s alert, there will be a short scene involving Abelard and Lieutenant Avrilla Vent. A riot is breaking out in the lower decks and you are asked to intervene Ask about Seneschal Werserian to proceed, though the other two options provide background information. You can choose to head to the lower decks or dismiss the matter entirely.

If you head to the lower decks, you meet the assault unit designed to eliminate the riot. Let them go ahead or choose to speak to the strikers. Follow the assault team to meet the strikers, who have different perspectives about the riot. There are three options to proceed:

  • Use Coercion 40 to get the rioters to withdraw their weapon request but consider everything else.
  • Give the rioters everything they want.
  • Continue with their elimination.

Asking Abelard will simply return you to the other three options. Choosing any of these options resolves the quest. Abelard will talk to you in private as you are about to leave the lower decks depending on how you resolve the situation.

The best option to resolve Dark Echelons is by using the Coercion 40 option. If you pass the check, you get some experience while getting most of the strikers on your side. This quiets the extreme faction of the riot, allowing you to proceed with a suitable compromise. You also gain the trust of residents in the lower decks, motivating them to seek out any remaining cultists.

Choosing to eliminate everyone is the fastest way to resolve the crisis but it spreads distrust among the lower-ranked officers. Giving the strikers everything they want escalates the problem later on while costing you one Profit Factor. While Abelard is not happy about any option that isn’t elimination, he will accept your final decision. This also expands on Abelard’s background, letting you learn more about him and start a relationship with him.

Here’s a quick recap of what you should do:

  • You get the quest randomly while traveling in Chapter 1.
  • Choose to put down the riot harshly or visit the lower decks.
  • Negotiate with the rioters with the Coercion option for the best results.
  • The other option of giving the rioters everything they want costs one Profit Factor and causes problems later.
