One of the most iconic voices in gaming is no longer with us. James McCaffrey, the actor behind Max Payne in the Max Payne trilogy and most recently Alex Casey in Alan Wake 2, has died of cancer. It is not known how long ago it was when he was first diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He had friends and family to keep him company in the end.
James McCaffrey Died of Cancer and Lived a Successful Life as an Actor in Max Payne, Alan Wake 2, and More
The news was confirmed to TMZ this morning. A representative of the late actor said, “He never lost his love for creating characters” across movies, TV, and video games. The rep cited the actor’s “good looks” had “often pushed him toward leading man roles.”
Before James McCaffrey graced gamers with his voice in Alan Wake 2 or Max Payne, he got his start with Law & Order creator Dick Wolf. Before network TV was dominated by the Law & Order franchise, the two worked together on crime series Swift Justice and New York Undercover. They would reunite for Criminal Intent and Special Victims Unit.
The biggest non-gaming role for the actor was from FX’s Rescue Me. He appeared in 56 out of the 93 episodes of the long-running drama. Other TV appearances included Jessica Jones, Suits, and She’s Gotta Have It.
Remedy Entertainment, the company behind Alan Wake and Max Payne, cast James McCaffrey in a bulk of its projects. While starring in the previously mentioned games, he made an appearance in Control and its two expansions. He did not star in any other games in his career.
He is survived by his wife, Rochelle Boström, whom he worked with in the TV series Viper. He is also survived by his daughter Tiarnan.
