Grab your proton pack; we’re going to bust some ghosts this spring. Sony has moved the release date of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire a week up. It was originally scheduled for March 29 and is now set for March 22. No reason is known for the date, but it does better position the film to take advantage of spring break for extra box office juice.
The film follows the Afterlife cast in New York as they take over the OG Ghostbusters firehouse base. A new spectral force freezes the city, leaving it up to our jumpsuited heroes to save the day. Returning cast members include Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts. Patton Oswalt and Kumail Nanjiani will be some of the newest cast members to be featured.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Gets a New Release Date During a Busy Month
Looking ahead at the calendar of film releases, it will be a tight March. For major releases, Dune: Part Two kicks off spring with an epic conclusion to the first film from Denis Villeneuve. In the following weeks leading up to the release of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, other films will include Kung Fu Panda 4, Love Lies Bleeding, Imaginary, and Mickey 17.
Afterlife co-writer Gil Kenan takes the director’s chair this time around. Kenan co-wrote the script of the latest film with Afterlife director Jason Reitman. From the trailer, this will capture the same sense of humor as before while delivering a colder, darker story.
The release date of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is new territory for the franchise. The previous films were released in the summer. Afterlife diverged from that when it was released in November 2021. Like the 2021 entry, this is canon with the original films and not the 2016 woman-led installment.
