Spyro has journeyed far from his PlayStation roots. These days he helps watch over and protect the equally quirky Skylands. But for this episode of Speedrun Fast, we’re going to turn back time and take a look at the final game in the Legend of Spyro trilogy – Dawn of the Dragon.

In this game, players can switch between Spyro and Cynder at will, or team up with a buddy and control both dragons at once. This game also features a flight mechanic, no longer limiting the purple hero(es) to the ground and allowing them to take off and land at will.

Naylte holds the current world record for the 100% category and the any% category. The run is most interesting when Spyro isn’t in the middle of combat and Naylte expertly guides him exactly where he needs to go. A glitch in the game prevents it from recognizing 100% completion even though it’s achieved. Normally players must erase the save data and start over. Doing so is arbitrary, as all necessary items can be collected regardless of the glitch.

We’re not done just yet. Naylte has some tips and explanations for the techniques he performs in his runs.

He doesn’t go into detail for each chapter in Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon. Instead, the moves he shows us are applicable universally throughout the game. There aren’t many runners who take on Dawn of the Dragon, but videos like this not only help get other runners interested, but they bring the seeming godlike skill of the speedrunning community down to the level of mere mortal gamers. This, along with post-commentation, is an important thing, not only for lesser-ran games like Spyro but for the sport as a whole.
