Five years ago, we all got a glimmer of hope due to one of the most anticipated remakes of a beloved Ubisoft game: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. We saw the trailer, fell in love with the revamped visuals, and got hyped about the opportunity to dive back into one of the franchise’s most memorable adventures. Our hype only grew further after we saw the studio confirming its release window for sometime in 2026. Some even speculated the game would shadowdrop this month. Well, in a way, we got a shadowdrop, but not of a game, but of a cancellation. Ubisoft has now announced that the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has been canceled, shattering everyone’s hopes.

The news comes from Ubisoft’s latest financial report, talking about a major “organizational, operational, and portfolio reset” to restore sustainable growth. In this overhaul, two studios are being shut down, and at least six games are being canceled, one of them being the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake. The studio also mentioned that four unannounced titles, including three new IPs and a mobile game, would never see the light of day.

The truth is that this is shocking news, especially since players were eagerly awaiting this remake. As you know, Sands of Time is regarded as one of the best games in the franchise and one that never got its moment in the modern spotlight.

Another sad piece of news is that Ubisoft has announced that it’s allocating development time to seven games, one of which was set to release during fiscal year 2026. Many speculate that this title was the remake of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, which, if true, will now launch sometime in fiscal year 2027, according to the company’s report.

Unfortunately, this is yet another blow to Ubisoft and the studios it has under its wings. The cancellation of so many products and the delay of others aren’t to be taken lightly, and players are now worried about the company’s future, especially since its 2026 catalog seems pretty empty. Still, the company could surprise us with new content for its ongoing titles, or maybe more news about the long-awaited Division 3 or some of the Assassin’s Creed titles that were already teased.
