Some of our favorite weird heroes are coming to a new medium. Lionsgate has released the first trailer for the Borderlands movie (seen below). We get a feel for its scale, the chemistry between the cast, and plenty of jokes that you would only expect from the looter shooter franchise.
The film follows Lilith (Cate Blanchett) returning to her home planet, Pandora. She is hired by Atlas (Edgar Ramirez) to rescue his daughter. She gathers a team of underdogs to help her accomplish her deadly mission. The cast of characters from the games brought to live-action include Kevin Hart as Roland, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Jack Black as Claptrap, and Gina Gershon as Moxxi.
The Borderlands Movie Trailer Goes Hard With Its Production Design
We get to see what this adventure has for our unlikely heroes. There is plenty of fun with them, like handling the unruly teenager and demolition maniac Tiny Tina, who ends up not rolling her window up in time for urine to spray from outside into the car and her friends. They manage to use their chemistry to help themselves out of dangerous situations against marauders and aliens in classic Borderlands fashion, as they have lots of guns.
The footage gives hope for a film that has been in development hell for years. Production wrapped in 2021. After that, we had not heard a peep about what we could expect. Now, with a first look at the film, it looks to nail the tone and visualization of a live-action version of the cel-shaded games and has delivered dazzling effects with its massive scale.
The Borderlands movie trailer also has given us insight into how Eli Roth has transitioned from smaller-budgeted horror films to one of 2024’s biggest blockbusters. He will be coming off last year’s Thanksgiving, which was the best-received film in his career. The filmmaker directed and co-wrote the film with Joe Crombie.
The official trailer has not marked a release date, although Borderlands is scheduled to be released on August 9. Until further notice, the film will stick to its release date despite the “coming soon” in the trailer and the description that Lionsgate has written.
