What is a Filler in Anime Like One Piece? Answered
Simply put, filler is anime original episodes that don’t cover the original story of the One Piece manga. Since the stories are mostly self-contained, they have no bearing on the overall plot of the comics and exist to fill the television time slot. They are sometimes used to promote the upcoming One Piece theatrical movie or other Shonen Jump series like Dragon Ball and Toriko as well.
Why do the One Piece anime studios create filler episodes? Remember that most popular manga-adaptation anime comes from an 18-page, weekly serialized manga series. A 25-minute TV anime episode at times can cover more stories than a dozen-page manga. Not to mention that manga creators can sometimes take weeks off to do research, holidays, or health reasons, while broadcast television rarely has days off. Unless a nationwide event is happening in Japan during the episode broadcast’s schedule then any scheduled show on TV must keep going on.
Because of that, every so often, the animated version will catch up with the comic’s story as it’s taking a break. As there are no more story arcs to adapt, the One Piece anime studio will have to come up with their own storylines.
However, sometimes filler episodes also adapt other source materials such as side stories from official novels. In rare situations, One Piece anime episodes canon to the manga’s plot can be filled with filler content to pad the running time too. For that reason, occasionally, their canonicity has become a subject of debate among fans.
