Blue Period is hitting the silver screen in brand-new medium. Tsubasa Yamaguchi’s manga has been a huge hit for nearly a decade, and Yatora Yaguchi’s life has already been adapted to an animated series in 2021. Now, Blue Period is getting the One Piece treatment – that is, a live-action adaptation, courtesy of Warner Bros. The new live-action adaptation dropped its first trailer today, with Gordon Maeda as an all-new version of Yatora Yaguchi that’s scheduled to hit theaters this summer.
Gordon Maeda Stars in a Live-Action Trailer for Yamaguchi’s ‘Blue Period’
Blue Period began its life as a manga in 2017, written and illustrated by Tsubasa Yamaguchi. The manga (and its following anime) tell the story of Yatora Yaguchi, a successful and popular high school student who’s secretly bored dissatisfied with his lack of direction. After visiting his school’s art room, Yatora is enamored with the idea of finding purpose through painting and jumps into the “beautiful yet unrelenting” world of art. Blue Period was adapted into an animated series starring Hiromu Mineta in 2021 and is currently available on Netflix.
The new live-action trailer for Warner Bros.’s version of Blue Period has Gordon Maeda as an at least visually accurate version of Yatora, based on the thirty seconds we got. Maeda is a well-known name in the world of live-action Japanese cinema, with some of his previous roles including Takashi Mitsuya in Tokyo Revengers and its 2-part sequel. Interestingly, Maeda’s brother, Mackenyu Maeda, stars as Zoro in Netflix’s live-action version of One Piece. It’s a small world out there, apparently.
The live-action adaptation of Blue Period is set to hit theaters on August 9th. More information about the movie’s cast, crew, and synopsis will likely be released as production continues, but for now, be sure to keep up with Tsubasa Yamaguchi’s new releases for Blue Period and watch its animated series on Netflix.
