A new biopic centered around rock icon Bruce Springsteen has found its home and its leading man. Deliver Me From Nowhere, based on Warren Zanes’s 2023 book, has been picked up by 20th Century Studios. The film will be directed by Scott Cooper (Hostiles) and star Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen. The real-life Springsteen and his longtime manager Jon Landau will both be attached to the project to assure authenticity, and executives have said called working with the rockstar a “once in a lifetime honor.”
Jeremy Allen White Is Bruce Springsteen in Scott Cooper’s Biopic
In May 2023, Warren Zane published Deliver Me From Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nevada. The novel explored the making of Nebraska, Bruce Springsteen’s sixth album that was released in 1982. The album is widely considered to be the most important of his career, as it reflects the turmoil that was spreading through the U.S. and Springsteen’s personal life as he stood on the brink of a breakdown. It’s not all that surprising, then, that Scott Cooper would target Warren Zane’s book as the inspiration for a documentary, but it also means that the choice for who to play Bruce Springsteen is a heavy one.
Enter Jeremy Allen White, best known for his roles as Lip Gallagher in Shameless and Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto in The Bear. At this point, he’s used to playing good characters who struggle with deep-seated and unseen issues, so we can only hope he’ll do justice to Bruce Springsteen, who has announced that he and Jon Landau will be attached to Deliver Me From Nowhere. Scott Cooper, the biopic’s director, also has a lot of weight on his shoulders, according to a statement he gave to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Bruce Springsteen, and Nebraska, in particular, have had a profound impact on me and my work…Bruce has formed an unparalleled legacy, painting an unflinching portrait of the human condition. Yet, amidst the darkness, a sense of resilience and a sense of hope shines through, reflecting an indomitable spirit. That’s the Bruce I’ve come to know and love and will honor with this film…This film has the potential to be a transformative cinematic experience, offering audiences a window into the soul of Bruce Springsteen and the universal truths that bind us all together.”
Scott Cooper, Director
Deliver Me From Nowhere is set to enter production this fall. Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Eric Robinson, Scott Stuber, Zanes, and Cooper are all slated to produce, while Springsteen and Landau will be attached to the production in an unknown – but probably advisory – role. More information on the biopic’s cast and production schedule will likely become available in the next few months.
