Did You Spot This Iron Man Easter Egg in the Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer?

Did you spot Iron Man in the new trailer?

The latest trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine is absolutely chock full of Easter eggs and MCU references. For example, you might have already spotted the giant Ant-Man corpse, the ruined 20th Century Fox logo, or Alioth, the all-consuming beast that exists at the end of time. Those were large set pieces and a little hard to miss. But there was another Easter egg in the trailer, one that’s much harder to overlook, and it references both HYDRA and the MCU’s original hero, Iron Man himself.

Deadpool & Wolverine was always going to be buried up to its neck in MCU references, mostly because Deadpool has never met a fourth wall he couldn’t break. When you pair him with Wolverine, who’s been a part of the X-Men since they and Deadpool were both owned by Fox, there’s absolutely no shortage of tongue-in-cheek jokes to be made, mostly at Fox’s expense. To this end, you can see a giant 20th Century Fox logo reduced to rubble in the background of the newest trailer as Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) battle in the Void. With this being a Marvel movie, there’s also a deep well of comics and MCU lore to pull from, leading to shots like the giant Ant-Man corpse or a cameo by Alioth.

However, there’s one more Easter egg in the new Deadpool & Wolverine trailer you might have missed, and it goes back to the MCU‘s roots with Iron Man. Roughly three-quarters of the way through the newtrailer, there’s a shot of a post-apocalyptic antique car. Based on some previous behind-the-scenes photos, fans have identified the car as a version of Johann Schmidt (aka Red Skull)’s coupe from Captain America: The First Avenger – but something’s different about it. Rather than its usual HYDRA hood ornament, the car has a hood ornament shaped like Tony Stark’s Iron Man mask.

Fans are abuzz with theories regarding this newest Easter egg. Does this mean some alternate version of Tony Stark is working with or for HYDRA? Does the car belong to a fan or Iron Man himself? The latter option seems more probable, given that the version of Tony Stark that we know and love is an outspoken fan of hot rods – like the one in the trailer – and we don’t see why his alternate self would be any different, HYDRA or not.

Deadpool & Wolverine is directed by Shaun Levy, with Levy, Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, and Lauren Shuler Donner as producers and Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, and Simon Kinberg producing. The movie will be released to theaters on July 26th.
