The 2024 Daytime Emmy nominations have created a stir with soap opera fans. The awards honor the best daytime dramas and their stars. While there are many deserving shows and actors, only a select few are chosen to compete for the coveted trophy. The Daytime Emmy nominations have a reputation for being unpredictable, and this year was no exception.
Here’s four shocking takeaways from the 2024 nominations.
4. The Bold and the Beautiful Had the Most Daytime Emmy Nominations
Usually, the ABC soap opera General Hospital sweeps the Emmy nominations. But this year The Bold and the Beautiful beat them for the most nods. According to Soap Central, the CBS drama scored a total of 12 nominations.
The Bold and the Beautiful earning so many nominations is a surprise because the soap opera has been criticized for lackluster and predictable writing. But they did have some emotional stories this past year, which must have won over voters. Aside from Outstanding Drama Series, the show also scored acting nods.
John McCook, Thorsten Kaye, and Scott Clifton are nominated for Lead Actor, while Annika Noelle and Katherine Kelly Lang are in the Lead Actress race. Rounding out the acting noms are Jennifer Gareis for Supporting Actress and Ashley Jones for Guest Performer.
While most fans disagree with the choices, it was nice to see another soap opera leading the pack for once.
3. The Bay Cast Members Earn Acting Nods
The Bay is a digital soap opera that most fans aren’t familiar with. The drama which airs on Popstar! TV, features many big-named daytime stars. Last year, the show gained attention when it was nominated for an Outstanding Drama Series Daytime Emmy. This year, the show once again received a Drama Series nomination along with acting nods for its cast.
Mike Manning and A Martinez earned Supporting Actor noms. This is the first time any actors from The Bay have been nominated in a major acting category. The inclusion of the actors over General Hospital star Nicholas Chavez or Mark Grossman from The Young and the Restless was a shock. But with The Bay and its cast receiving recognition, it could make fans eager to check out the series.
2. The Australian Soap Opera Neighbours Is Nominated for Outstanding Drama Series
This year’s Outstanding Drama Series category was filled with a huge surprise. Of course, the four big soap operas were nominated along with the The Bay. Then the Academy decided to add another nominee, the Australian soap opera Neighbours.
Neighbours aired on Australian television from 1985 to 2022 and launched the careers of famous stars such as Kylie Minogue and Margot Robbie. After the soap opera’s cancellation, Amazon picked up the series with new episodes airing on Freevee in 2023. Since Neighbours is distributed by Amazon, it is now eligible for Daytime Emmy nominations. Although it’s a longshot against the other shows, Neighbours has garnered interest from fans and could be an award contender in the years to come.
1. Melody Thomas Scott Was Robbed of a Daytime Emmy Nomination
The Daytime Emmy nominations tend to snub actresses who deserve recognition. One of the notable names missing from this year’s list is The Young and the Restless star Melody Thomas Scott.
Scott gave a tremendous performance as Nikki Newman struggled with her sobriety and living in fear of Jordan. She seemed a shoo-in to be nominated for Lead Actress, yet Scott’s name wasn’t announced. The Academy’s decision to exclude Scott was a huge shocker, and it’s making fans question the voting process. Someone like Katherine Kelly Lang or Tamara Braun getting nominated over Scott is a head-scratcher.
While Scott didn’t receive a nomination in 2024, there’s always next year. Nikki’s storyline with Jordan is still front-burner, and Scott is churning out top tier performances. If Scott is snubbed again, then the Daytime Emmys might lose some of its prestige.
