Despite all of the marvelous, loveable characters in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s safe to say that Groot stole the show with his famous one-liners. Just when we thought it wasn’t possible to love Groot anymore, the creators introduced us to Baby Groot in the trailer for the new Guardians movie. After the immensely positive response to the character from fans, Marvel decided to give Baby Groot his own comic book titled, I Am Groot.
The new comic series will focus on a miniature Groot; he is lost in a strange, unfamiliar world and he is desperate to get back to his fellow Guardians. Here’s the official summary from Marvel:
When the Guardians of the Galaxy get caught in a wormhole, a smaller-than-normal Groot is separated billions of light-years away from the team. Falling to a planet below, Groot discovers he is on an entirely alien and unknown world full of strange creatures and societies. Seriously underdeveloped and with nobody who can understand him, Groot will need to make the journey to the center of this world and find the way back to his family!
Christopher Hastings (Adventure Time and Deadpool) will be in charge of writing the new addition to the Guardians universe, and the comic is being drawn by Flaviano, known for his work in Marvel’s Power Man and Iron Fist and DC’s Harley Quinn and Powergirl. Clearly, this power duo is the perfect choice to bring Groot’s quirky characteristics to the print world. In a recent interview, Hastings admitted to being drawn to his character because of his inability to communicate effectively. The writer was also heavily inspired by everyone’s favorite silent hero, Link from The Legend of Zelda.
The first iteration in the I Am Groot series will be available sometime in May of this year (right around the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on May 5th!).
