Soon after the recent announcement of Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it was confirmed that it would require an internet connection in some capacity. This led most fans to believe that it required a constant connection while playing the game. The developers took to X (Formerly Twitter) and put those fears to rest. According to the announcement, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will not require a constant internet connection during gameplay, but it will require one while installing.

After the cinematic reveal, this news led to quick fan backlash over forcing online connectivity, which resulted in a prompt response from Ubisoft. Now Assassin’s Creed fans can rest easy knowing that they will only need to connect once while the game installs, and then can play through the game’s entirety without needing an internet connection.

Although this is good, it has still led many to discuss the game’s future in terms of preservation, especially after what happened to The Crew 2. Ubisoft has always integrated online components in its games to the dismay of many fans, and has even foregone performance for said “features.”

For those who are unaware, when a game mandates a constant online connection to play, it can cause numerous issues for players who don’t have stable connections. Not only can it hinder performance, but if the game keeps booting you out every time your connection drops, it could result in constantly losing progress as well.

It is still unclear what kind of online features Assassin’s Creed Shadows will launch with since Ubisoft games in the past have included online stores. Ubisoft didn’t provide any information on the matter but did tease that there are more reveals on the way before the launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows on November 15, 2024, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X.
