Earlier this week Pixar released the teaser trailer for an upcoming feature film based around the Land of the Dead. Coco will tell the story of Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez), a 12-year-old aspiring musician who is obsessed with the legend of Mexican guitarist Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt).
The film will be lead by Lee Unkrich, director of Toy Story 3, and will focus on Miguel’s adventure through the Land of the Dead. Coco will also – like a lot of Pixar and Disney films – have a considerable musical component, as our hero is transported to this colorful land after touching de la Cruz’s mythical guitar.

As of late, the company has been diversifying its film’s cultural focus, exploring Hawaiian heritage in Moana, Irish folklore in Brave and now the rich tradition surrounding Día de Los Muertos, the Mexican Day of the Dead. Coco will be the first Pixar film to revolve around Mexican culture but has received some flack for it’s similarities to another animated film.
After the success of The Book of Life (2014) – which explored the heritage behind The Day of the Dead as well – it will be interesting to see Pixar’s take on Mexico’s biggest celebration of the year. While The Book of Life’s plot was largely driven by a love story, the exact theme behind Coco – aside from a love of music – have yet to be divulged.
Coco is scheduled to be released in the US on November 22, 2017, during the Thanksgiving weekend and three weeks after the Day of the Dead celebration, and will be released in UK cinemas in December. For more information, be sure to stay tuned to the sites for updates and all of your Nerdy News!
