Heathcliff Andrew “Heath” Ledger’s death on January 22, 2008, broke the hearts of millions, as the young actor passed away due to Cardiac arrest brought on by prescription drug intoxication. Almost a decade later, on what would have been his 38th birthday, Spike TV has released a trailer for their brand new documentary “I am Heath Ledger.”
The trailer reveals that the upcoming feature length documentary will contain never before seen footage of Ledger, some of which is documented by the award winner actor himself. Alongside the home footage, the documentary will feature candid interviews with Ledger’s family, friends, and Hollywood peers.

The sneak peak into the film discusses Ledger’s love of being on camera, and how there was always some form of filming surrounding his life. “I Am Heath Ledger” will also shed some light on the stars downward spiral as a result of acting.
“He wanted fame, and then when he got it, he didn’t want it,” said filmmaker Matt Amato.
Heath Ledger is best known for his oscar winning role as the Joker in The Dark Knight and his lead role in the controversial film Brokeback Mountain. But the actors supporting roles in movies like Lords of Dogtown show that like director Ang Lee stated in the trailer, “Even as supporting actor, he will steal the whole show. That’s the power of Heath Ledger.”
The film is produced by Derik Murray, who is well versed in documentaries surrounding pop culture figures, including films about Bruce Lee, Evel Knievel, Chris Farley and John F. Kennedy Jr.
“I Am Heath Ledger” will make its debut at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival on April 23, and will air on Spike TV on May 17.
