Alright, people, calm down. It’s not really going to happen like that. But it will happen. The Master is due to appear in Doctor Who season 10 (wait, is it season or series? So confusing! I’ll just call it “season.”), as the familiar nemesis played by John Simm. Interestingly, Michelle Gozez’s Missy is also on the guest list. Hm, so does Missy regress into the Master, or does the Master emerge from the convoluted chaos of time-space only to regenerate once again into Missy? Or, Heaven forbid, are we getting both of these incarnations at once? Because, let’s face it – if the Doctor can do it, the Master/Missy can, too.
The Master has a long history in the Doctor Who franchise. He’s been played by eight different actors to date and appeared in more episodes than I care to count. But each and every time, he made himself memorable. Who could forget every human in the world being turned into Masters, or flipping sides and helping the Doctor stop the other Timelords? Raising a Cyberman army as Missy and seemingly being vaporized, only to turn up alive and well. “I can confirm that it’s true, thanks to the power of time travel I’m back,” says Simm in a confirmation of his return to the show. The statement was followed by one from show-runner Steven Moffat: “It’s been a huge pleasure to have fan favorites John Simm and Michelle Gomez face-to-face in the same role!” As for the rest of us, we can’t wait to see what’s in the works for the show’s next broadcast.
