Cloak and Dagger was created in the 80’s by Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan, and even though it didn’t gain the popularity comparable to other Marvel characters, they have a loyal cult following. The story focuses on two homeless, runaway teens: Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt). The two teens are experimented on by a scientist creating a synthetic form of heroin, and through this, the duo form their powers. Tandy, or Dagger, develops light based abilities that allow her to form “light daggers”. While Tyrone, or Cloak, becomes a portal to a dark dimension with a little teleportation on the side. The two form a symbiotic relationship as Dagger’s light dagger is the only thing, other than human life, that feeds into Cloak’ constant hunger. They then use their powers to fight drug crime throughout the city of New York.
From what is shown in the trailer, it looks like the show will stay pretty true to the comics from the 80’s. Freeform, or formerly known as ABC Family, have a budget similar to the one for Netflix’s Daredevil. Needless to say, we can expect another well done, fleshed out superhero series in the near future (hopefully!). An official release date has yet to be released, but Freeform had promised that we will see the show premiere sometime next year in 2018. One can only imagine where the two heroes might pop up in the Marvel cinematic universe now that they have been announced.
