Arc System Works has announced that it is reviving the Double Dragon franchise with a new entry. Arcsys is best known for making some of the best-looking fighting games out there, like Guilty Gear Strive, Granblue Fantasy Versus, DNF Duel, and Dragon Ball FighterZ, among others. But this time, the Japanese developer will be flexing its creative muscles in making a traditional beat-em-up that will suit the new Double Dragon game.

The reveal comes from Famitsu, where Arc System Works confirmed that it plans on faithfully recreating the side-scrolling action of the original Double Dragon games in a new 3D design that is hopefully as stylish and fluid as the company’s fighting games.

Even though we haven’t even gotten a look at the new Double Dragon game, the developer confirmed that it will come out sometime in next year on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox, and PC, if there aren’t any delays, that is.

If you grew up around the 1980s and 1990s, you have likely heard of Double Dragon quite a few times. The originals helped create the beat-em-up genre in the arcades and a new entry only makes sense after the success of other revived beat-em-ups like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge and Streets of Rage. If Arcsys takes a page from their books, it can capture interest like the recently revealed Power Rangers and apart from the visual style, add a deep combat system akin to its fighting games.

Arc System Works obtained the Double Dragon IP back in 2015 and then released Double Dragon 4 which was made with the help of developers of the original games and director Kishimoto Yoshihisa. It didn’t do very well, both critically and commercially, but the new Double Dragon game has another opportunity to bring the series back with a bang.
