This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information.

The rumors floating around about Apple’s latest line of laptops is, well, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of information behind these rumors. Apple has been pretty good at keeping most of the updates coming to their laptops some point this summer a secret. But what we do know about these new line up laptops suggest that most of the changes will be internal.

Although the full list of changes will be announced at Apple’s annual conference in early June, we still have a little bit of what will make these laptops different than their predecessors. The MacBook Pro will be getting an improved Kaby Lake Processor from Intel. Kaby Lake is just a codename for the brand names we are used to hearing (i3, i5, i7, etc.).  The 12 inch MacBook is rumored to get a faster Intel chip and the 13 inch MacBook Air may get an update that’ll include a new processor.

The exact details of these updates will be released at the press conference that I mentioned was happening in June. But this event is beside the point. Apple needs to bring some major changes to their laptops if they want to keep up with Microsoft. After the release of the Surface Laptop earlier this month, there’s some pressure on Apple to similar headway into the future. Like the MacBooks, the Surface Laptop is made for college students. But just not students. It’s also aimed at “regular” computer users (not gamers, creators, developers, etc.), much like the MacBook.

The Surface Laptop looks oddly familiar…

Now that Apple has some competition, considering a good majority of MacBook sales center around college students, they are going to have to really make these updates stretch to demographics outside of what they’re used to. While many of Microsoft’s Surface PCs are meant to be used for a specific purpose, the MacBooks haven’t changed as much as they should with time. Granted, the iPhone is what Apple spends most of their time updating because it makes the most money, but if they don’t start making some huge changes to their line of laptops, then they may not have a chance in this battle with Microsoft. That’s why this update coming this summer is important. More to come after the conference in June.
