Geralt of Rivia and his band of genetically modified monster hunters are headed to Netflix. The streaming service is developing an English-language drama series based on The Witcher novels and short stories by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. Sapkowski will also serve as a creative consultant for the series.

The books have been translated into over twenty different languages and spawned the excellent Witcher video game series. The Witcher 3 was picked by an overwhelming amount of publications as 2015’s game of the year.

Platige Image, a Polish visual effects studio, will be working on the series as well. It has created award-winning work for the in-game cutscenes as well as for various films. There is no word yet on whether the show will be live action or CGI, or a combination.

Geralt will still hate portals, of course.

Sapkowski had this to say about his deal with Netflix: “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing. I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”

Sean Daniel (The Mummy franchise) and Jason Brown (The Expanse) will serve as executive producers. They spoke of their excitement to be working on the show: “The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in an unconventional world. The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life on Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”

Sounds like an exciting development. We will have more details as they become available; if the show is animated in some way, it would melt my heart if they can land Doug Cockle, who voices Geralt in the games.
