The modern format for most action movies involves either a trilogy or copious amounts of unnecessary sequels, but it seems Edge of Tomorrow’s sequel won’t follow that trend. The film’s director, Doug Liman revealed that the Edge of Tomorrow 2 will complete the franchise, ending it at just two films.
Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are set to return for the next installment as futuristic soldiers Bill Cage and Rita Vrataski, but Liman announced that a third main character will be introduced as well. While appearing on the MTV HSC Podcast, the director stated that the sequel won’t feature as much action as the first, with the original acting as a “sort of the ad campaign” for Edge of Tomorrow’s sequel, giving time to focus on the three main characters.
“We can do way more focus on Tom’s character and Emily Blunt’s character, and there’s a third character in the sequel that’s gonna for sure steal the movie. We can focus on that. I don’t need an action sequence every two minutes.”
Liman goes on to say that Edge of Tomorrow has been a two movie franchise from the outset, with the first one establishing the relationship between Cruise and Blunt’s characters. In regards to just what’s in store for fans in the next iteration, he described the plot as “a sequel that’s a prequel.”
Given the non-linear, wonky timeline mechanics introduced in the first film, that statement could mean any number of different things. Either way, it’s refreshing to see that the franchise has a specific plan and isn’t going to create more content than necessary to tell the story that it wants to tell.
