Platinum Games has recently acquired the trademark for The Wonderful 101 from Nintendo. This came to light because of a document that was sent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office at the beginning of September to move the ownership of The Wonderful 101 IP from Nintendo to Platinum Games.

The official document can be viewed online and it even includes a link that reveals when the transfer was recorded, which, unsurprisingly, happened fairly recently in mid-August, and the transfer was on September 9, 2024.

The rumor mill had been churning for a while online that Platinum Games had gotten its hands on The Wonderful 101 IP from Nintendo to remaster the 2020 game on current generation consoles. But those were squashed by the studio when it confirmed that it only had rights to the remaster alone, and not The Wonderful 101 trademark itself.

Bayonetta Director Hideki Kamiya Is Leaving PlatinumGames

It appears that after a very long wait and possibly some difficulties behind the scenes, Platinum Games has finally acquired The Wonderful 101 IP for itself completely. This likely means that, if you were a fan of the series, another entry or more remasters might follow in the near future.

Platinum Games has been under the radar for a while now, after the massively successful and popular Nier Automata, and the disappointing flop that was Babylon’s Fall, the studio only released Nintendo-exclusive titles. The most recent games from the company are Bayonetta 3 which came out in 2022, and Bayonetta Origins Cereza and the Lost Demon, which came out in 2023. The director of Bayonetta, Hideki Kamiya, left Platinum Games late last year.

The only game we’re aware of that is still being worked on is Project G.G., which has not received a full reveal at the time of writing but is confirmed to be a self-published title.
