Ubisoft Reportedly Cancels AC Shadows Press Preview After Cancelling Tokyo Game Show Appearance, ‘Due to Various Circumstances’

Let’s see what happens

Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is the latest entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, taking players to Sengoku-era Japan. The game has a worldwide release date of November 15, 2024, though something tells me this might change. Ubisoft’s Japanese Twitter account released a statement today notifying fans that despite the promise to attend, AC Shadows will not be present at the Tokyo Game Show. Simultaneously, the developer canceled all of their press previews.

The release date for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows has remained the same as of the announcement, though there is no real reason why Ubisoft has chosen not to attend the show nor speak with the press. They simply released a statement on Twitter, letting fans know about the decision not to appear at the show. As for the cancellation of press previews, outlets were notified today.

I used Google Translate to roughly translate the Tweet, as it’s entirely in Japanese. Ideally, the announcement says,

Regarding our exhibit at TOKYO GAME SHOW 2024 scheduled to start at 3:00 pm on September 26th, we regret to inform you that due to various circumstances, we have decided to cancel our exhibit. The currently ongoing giveaway campaign to commemorate the official release will continue. We apologize for the short notice. We hope everyone is looking forward to the release.”

Commentators took to the replies, adding their opinions on why Ubisoft would announce this about AC Shadows two days before Tokyo Game Show itself. Some replies agree with me that the release date will probably be pushed back, while others think that Ubisoft made the choice to placate Japanese people who are concerned about the game’s contents. I’d like to think that Ubisoft works hard to ensure that the cultural information in their games derives from genuine points in history, so my money is on the game being delayed and them being too afraid to tell people.
