Billy Ray Cyrus‘ ex, Firerose, is looking back at their tumultuous marriage without a rose-colored glass. More than a month after finalizing their divorce, the singer is opening up about how she ignored the signs as far back as her first meeting with the country artist.
In a new interview with Stellar Magazine, Firerose spilled the tea, recalling how she met the Cyrus patriarch when she was just 22, auditioning on his daughter’s show, Hannah Montana. “He said, I’ll just introduce you to everyone else, and we can hang out for the rest of the day,” she reminisced. “My gut instinct, honestly, was: what does this guy want? I probably should have had way better boundaries.” Firerose, who lamented her decision, confessed she was “by no means interested in a romance” at first. However, a reconnection during the 2020 pandemic led her down a road she will forever regret.
“But I couldn’t have seen 10 years into the future. When I think about what I just went through, I would have told my 22-year-old self to run in the opposite direction and never look back.”
The Australian native said her marriage to the Old Town Road singer deprived her of her support network. According to Firerose, only one friend of hers, who doubled as her stylist, was allowed to come to their wedding. “All of a sudden, instead of being my normal lively, outgoing self, I became very introverted,” she explained. “My family and friends all had the same experience: me withdrawing and pushing them away.”

Firerose revealed that at the beginning of her marriage to Billy Ray Cyrus, she thought he was “protective” by giving her a list of rules to follow. He would often reportedly tell her, “‘Well, you can’t live that way anymore. You’re a Cyrus now. You can’t be going to church. You can’t be going to public places where people could follow you home. You’re going to be murdered.'”
It wasn’t until the divorce that she realized the unfair treatment. “I justified it like, well, that’s my life now. I accepted his lunacy as reality,” she stated. Firerose’s account of their union differs from Cyrus’. The patriarch described their marriage as a “crazy insane scam,” alleging that Firerose only married him for his famous last name.
