Image Comics announced that the first five issues of Black Cloud would be coming together in one volume later this year. From the creators of Spider-Gwen, Airboy, and Southern Bastards comes an all new kind of adventure, one where Heroes are in short supply.

Black Cloud tells the story of Zelda, who has just begun her journey, one which will start a war of dreams.

In an interview with Vulture, Jason Latour and Ivan Brandon, the creators of the comic, defined Black Cloud as “Jessica Jones meets Who Framed Roger Rabbit.” They go on to detail that the world of the comic is one created by dreams, just ones that aren’t your own.

“In the days when story and reality were one, the old blood—people with the power to shape stories—built a new world to escape the future we all came to live in. Generations later, Zelda rejects the old blood’s dreams and escapes into our world to run from destiny. But destiny has a nasty way of catching up to you.”

The comic’s use of creative magic, mixed with the realism of the modern day, is sure to set it apart from the bevy of others that are trying to make their start. Black Cloud Volume 1 will also feature an African American female protagonist, something the creators did with the idea in mind that minorities or women shouldn’t simply be relegated to girlfriend or sidekick roles.

Black Cloud, Volume 1: No Exit will arrive in comic book stores Wednesday, October 11th and bookstores Tuesday, October 17th. The final order cutoff deadline for comics retailers is Monday, August 7th. Be sure to pre order via Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Indiebound, and Indigo to get your copy first!
