On TikTok, a video has gone viral depicting an older man filling his truck at a Speedway gas station in Ohio. He appeared to be displeased, and says as much, as the cost of filling his vehicle runs him $75.
The short 38-second video is captioned, “$4.99 per gallon,” with the man at the gas station, TikTok user The Mortgage Engineer, getting 15 gallons totaling $75. According to him, he used to get the same amount for just $40. He mockingly adds, “I’m glad we’re taking care of every part of the world except for this part.”
He makes a dig at President Trump, saying sarcastically, “No tax on tips? No, this is a tax on every hardworking American. Thank you, DJT.” The Mortgage Engineer then shares the interaction he had with the cashier, who asked if he wanted to donate. His only response was, “I just donated to your gas pumps out there, homie. There’s nothing left.”
Debate on the Fault of Gas Prices is Sparked Online
The Mortgage Engineer’s video gained hundreds of comments, with many placing the blame squarely on President Trump, as he did. “Welcome to Trump economics,” one of the top comments reads, with another arguing that gas is a “temporary world peace” and would be “worth it.”
One commenter asked, “Why isn’t anyone talking about diesel prices,” which the TikToker liked. In the Mortgage Engineer’s video, you could see the price of gas at the Speedway he went to. At least in his area, diesel was running almost $5.70 per gallon. Someone in Sherman Oaks, California shared an image of prices at their Mobil, with diesel priced at $8.50.
Another TikTok user argued the high gas prices were nothing more than “birthing pains” and that America would “go through a difficult time” before things returned to normal. “It’ll be worth it,” they justified. This resulted in several viewers trashing her online. One of the most scathing responses read, “Did you use your brain when you typed this paragraph 🙄.”
Although debate continues on, very few people online were unconvinced that high gas prices would lead to anything good. Instead, it has just made the rising cost of living that much harder on working Americans.
