Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Team Team Reportedly Disbanded By Ubisoft

Making great games is unacceptable these days

In an unfortunate turn of events, Ubisoft has decided to disband the team that made Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. This news was originally posted by the Origami YouTube channel, citing multiple sources that confirmed the confounding decision.

Ubisoft then corroborated this in a response to Eurogamer where it confirmed that since the game was feature-complete and its roadmap has ended, the people working on it have been moved to other projects. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown won’t get any future updates and Ubisoft’s goal is to just make sure that more people can play it.

The reason why the team was disbanded is because Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown did not meet sales expectations. The team had a lot of ideas regarding the future of the game, including possible sequels. However, the relatively low sales meant that any pitches for sequels were squashed soon after the release of the game.

The sequels planned were reportedly turned into DLC expansions instead to get the game feature complete and shelf the IP. According to Ubisoft, making a sequel to Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown would cannibalize the sales of the original game, which could be said for every sequel of every game.

The reason this is a disappointing decision from the French developer is that the fans who got the game held it in very high regard. The same can be said about critics, that believed it was a good game all around.

This evokes memories of the recently saved HiFi Rush and Tango Gameworks, another team that was punished for creating a game that everyone enjoyed and wanted sequels of. Prince of Persia fans won’t be left high and dry, because Ubisoft still has the constantly delayed Sands of Time Remake in development with the possibility of other spin-offs like The Rogue Prince of Persia.

Ubisoft is going through a rough patch because of the relatively low sales of Star Wars Outlaws and then decided to delay Assassin’s Creed Shadows into February 2025, which is an extremely competitive month. The Collector’s Edition of the game has seen a price drop as well due to some content changes.
