Charlie’s Angels star Farrah Fawcett and actor Ryan O’Neal‘s on-and-off relationship lasted over thirty years. Throughout this entire period, the Hollywood couple never legally married. They began dating in 1979 and welcomed a son, Redmond O’Neal, in 1985. The couple broke up again in 1997 before reuniting in 2001 and stayed together until Farrah died in 2009.
The couple suffered a passionate but turbulent relationship that reportedly bled over into their son Redmond O’Neal’s life. Over the years, Redmond’s troubles grew. He found himself in trouble with the law on multiple occasions and suffered from addiction and mental health issues.
In 2019, Redmond O’Neal was placed in Patton State Hospital in Los Angeles after he was deemed unfit to stand trial for attempted murder stemming from his 2019 arrest. Sources close to the O’Neal family tell In Touch that Redmond will likely remain at the facility for the rest of his life.
“Redmond has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and antisocial personality disorder,” says the first insider. They also add the longtime addict has made little progress in his time at Patton State Hospital.”

In 2018, Redmond O’Neal was arrested on multiple charges following an altercation with another man. Law officers accused him of possessing heroin and meth. He was also charged for allegedly stabbing a man, injuring another with a broken bottle, and armed robbery.
At age 39, Redmond has now spent most of his adult life in jail, rehab, or in the psych ward. In 2023, his father, Ryan O’Neal, died of heart failure. However, Redmond’s doctors deemed him unfit to leave the institution to attend the memorial service.
Redmond O’Neal’s prognosis is grim. The family insider says that sadly, Farrah Fawcett’s beloved only child has limited “moments of recognition” that cause him to cry — “sometimes uncontrollably.”
He hates his family members. Redmond also refuses visits with his half-siblings, sister, Paper Moon star Tatum O’Neal, and brothers Griffin and Patrick O’Neal. He refuses to have any contact, leaving family members heartbroken and concerned.
As far as Redmond O’Neal is concerned, he holds his parents, Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O’Neal, responsible for his traumatic life. He feels their chaotic relationship and fame are entirely responsible for his troubles.
He refuses to accept responsibility for his actions over the years. “Redmond just continually believes his family ruined him,” a family insider stated.
