This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information.

Scottish software technology provider Cloudgine is well known behind the scenes in the video game industry for their work on Crackdown 3 and Toybox. Now, the team from Edinburgh has decided they want to take their own crack (no pun intended) at creating a video game, titled They Came From Space.

Their first attempt at creating their own game will certainly be a daring one, as They Came From Space will be built around an intensive proof-of-concept that will center around Cloud Gaming. In a press release, Cloudgine CEO Maurizio Sciglio detailed exactly how the game and the engine hope to innovate the gaming landscape.

“Game development has been long awaiting a drastic change-up – a new technology that can truly expand possibilities and allow developers to super-charge their projects with unprecedented levels of compute power,” Sciglio said. “We created They Came From Space to give developers a clear, fun idea of how powerful Cloudgine’s cloud-based physics, rendered at 90fps, really is. And believe us when we say that this is just an introduction into what Cloudgine is capable of – there’s so much room for continued innovation with our platform and there is so much more coming beyond physics that it’s, frankly, hard to imagine how far talented developers will push it.”

Alongside the press release, Cloudgine released a trailer for the upcoming game, which will center around an alien invasion. The players will take control of either an alien Overseer or one of their drones in a 50’s style B-Movie inspired alien invasion, competing with a rival brood to destroy and take over the newly discovered planet.

The trailer makes the game feel like Katamari Damacy combined with Destroy All Humans! They Came From Space will also allow players to use their Oculus and Vive headsets to experience the game in VR.

It should be interesting to see how the 10-player online team battles work for VR and PC players, as the ones with VR headsets will work as the Overseers, with PC gamer listening to their commands.
