This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information.

Despite the raving reviews that came with the latest season of Game of Thrones,  the HBO hit won’t be walking away with any awards. For the first time since its start in 2011, Game of Thrones will not be nominated for an Emmy. And the reason is pretty bogus: it all boils down to timing.

To be considered for an Emmy for the 2017 season, the show in question must have premiered between June 1, 2016 and May 31, 2017. For fans of the show, they will be aware that the sixth season premiered on April 26, 2016 while the newest season didn’t premiere until July 16, 2017. Although Game of Thrones had a few episodes air during that time frame, it still doesn’t count according to the Emmy guidelines. However, not all hope is lost because the seventh season will be eligible for Emmy nominations in 2018.

Luckily, HBO knew this was a possibility due to the need to push filming back because of story development. As everyone is aware, winter has finally come to Westeros. Because of this, they had to wait until the weather and days would cooperate with the setting for the HBO hit. This is the same reason why the seventh season had such a late premiere date this year. However, since there will be a little more than a year gap before the next and final season starts, Emmy nominations shouldn’t be a problem in 2019.

Since its release in 2011, Game of Thrones has taken home almost 40 Emmys in all sorts of categories and has broken the record for the most Emmys awarded to a television series. Just last year, the cast and crew won 12 different Emmys alone. The 2017 Emmys will air Sunday, Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and you can check out all of the nominations here!
