California Liberals Fear Split Vote Could Hand Spencer Pratt a Spot in L.A. Mayor Race: ‘Putting the Blame on Rae’

Progressives are now counting votes nervously

California liberals are growing increasingly anxious over a possible split vote in the Los Angeles mayoral primary.

An escalating conflict between two progressive candidates has triggered fears that internal division on the left could unintentionally help reality television personality Spencer Pratt secure a spot in the mayoral runoff. The concern intensified after supporters of Council member Nithya Raman reportedly urged activist Rae Huang to suspend her campaign, arguing that a divided progressive vote could weaken their chances.

According to LA Material, members of Raman’s campaign encouraged Huang to exit the race in order to prevent progressive votes from splintering across multiple candidates. Some supporters framed Huang’s withdrawal as an opportunity to “be the savior of the left” and block Pratt from advancing into the general election.

The anxiety surrounding the race centers on Los Angeles’ nonpartisan primary system, where the top two candidates advance regardless of party affiliation. Progressive organizers and online observers fear a divided liberal vote could weaken Raman’s standing enough to open a path for Pratt to reach the runoff against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass.

Huang rejected calls to leave the race, arguing she was not interested in leading “a campaign that can be bought.” The disagreement exposed broader tensions inside Los Angeles’ progressive coalition, where activists remain divided between ideological loyalty and strategic voting ahead of the primary.

Liberals Fear Internal Division Could Help Republicans

Online discussions quickly turned toward fears that progressive infighting could hand conservatives an unexpected political opening in one of the country’s most liberal cities.

A local voter rejected the tactical pressure, stating that “putting the blame on Rae” is incredibly cowardly. They argued the establishment campaign should focus on “winning over those voters instead of demanding she quit.”

“Raman’s team thinks they own the progressive lane,” a thread participant observed. Assessing the demand to step aside, another commenter wrote that “telling a woman of color to be the ‘savior’ by disappearing is actually terrible for left wing beliefs.”

A frustrated constituent declared they were “exhausted by these backroom deals where politicians pick the ballot for us.”

“If your campaign is so strong, you shouldn’t need to bully a grassroots organizer out of the race,” another individual added.

“The rhetoric will be absolutely hell if Pratt actually sneaks through,” a platform user predicted. Another community member warned that “alienating the exact base you need to win” guarantees a disastrous turnout in the general election.

Conversely, some residents defended the political calculus, with one noting that “pragmatism is how you actually keep the right wing out of City Hall.”

“You can’t govern if you don’t win, and splitting the vote here is just political suicide,” a separate commenter argued.

“Rae has no path to victory with single digits,” a different observer pointed out. “It’s not bullying to ask a spoiler candidate to see the writing on the wall before it’s too late,” the voter concluded.

With the primary calendar advancing, the fight for control of the local progressive platform now shifts to the voters navigating these divided ballot options.
