Sony Employs Former Piracy Site, Crunchyroll, for Ghost of Tsushima Anime Adaptation

All kinds of ghosts

Given Ghost of Tsushima‘s success and popularity, it was only a matter of time before fans got several kinds of adaptations. Sony has thus announced an anime adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima. However, you might want to prepare to shell out a bit for another subscription service because the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima anime will be exclusive to the anime streaming service, Crunchyroll.

Crunchyroll itself also announced the adaptation along with a partnership with Aniplex studio in Sony Group Corporation’s CES 2025 (Consumer Electronics Show). The anime adaptation will likely have the same title, though its release date is still far off in 2027. Again, the Ghost of Tsushima anime adaptation will be exclusively available on Crunchyroll.

No casting or staff have been revealed apart from director Takanobu Mizuno and writer, Gen Urobuchi. Takanobu Mizuno is known for directing Star Wars: Visions “The Duel” and has worked on other high-profile adaptations such as Batman Ninja.

Meanwhile, Aniplex, the animation studio that will be responsible for the visuals, also has a high-profile portfolio including Demon Slayer, Solo Leveling, and Sword Art Online. Sony Music will also be responsible for the adaptation’s soundtrack.

Ghost of Tsushima is Branching Out

It’s worth noting that this Ghost of Tsushima anime adaptation is not to be confused with the live-action Ghost of Tsushima movie adaptation, which is currently also in the works and helmed by John Wick director and visionary, Chad Stahelski.

For Crunchyroll, this is one of their first few steps into becoming a huge player in the streaming service playground at the same level as Netflix. The Ghost of Tsushima exclusivity deal with Sony is nothing to scoff at and will surely bring Crunchyroll more subscribers.

Crunchyroll notably began in 2006 as a website hosting and distributing illegal and pirated copies of anime. However, the site transitioned to providing legitimate and licensed content in 2008 and even received a $4 million investment. Beginning in 2020, Sony acquired Crunchyroll as a subsidiary and merged the site with Funimation in 2021.
