Matt Reeves is Open to Bringing Robert Pattinson’s Batman to James Gunn’s DCU if ‘It Makes Sense’

The DCU is just at its infancy stage at this point and yet, it’s already having one of its biggest conundrums: which Batman to bring in? The most available choice would be Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s The Batman but even the creative leads in the DCU are torn between themselves. A recent interview, however, reveals that The Batman director Matt Reeves and Superman director James Gunn might be gradually opening up to the idea.

Speaking to ‘Happy, Sad, Confused’ during his appearance at the Golden Globes, director Matt Reeves stated his stance on the matter. For Reeves, his brooding Batman’s appearance in James Gunn’s presumably more lighthearted DCU depends on whether it makes sense.

Of course, the decision didn’t solely rely on Matt Reeves and DCU or James Gunn could still choose to integrate the darker Batman into the DC reboot. To that, Reeves remains partial and “will have to see where that goes.” Here’s the full interaction:

The Batman Needs More Contemplation

Back in 2024, however, even James Gunn stated that while he contemplated integrating Matt Reeves’ Batman into the DCU, he’s still undecided on the matter. Gunn does have plenty of time to contemplate some more, however, as The Batman 2 has been delayed to October 2027, giving him plenty of time to squeeze in DCU teasers depending on his decision.

Some fans, however, suspected that the delay for The Batman 2 or Part 2 was due to James Gunn’s contemplation on whether to change the script for a DCU integration. Gunn even defended the delay, saying that even a 5-year gap is ‘fairly common’ for sequels.

As for Matt Reeves, his decision to exclude his Batman from the DCU a few years ago was more or less a clear statement that he wants his version of the vigilante to stay away from the Justice League. Now, however, it appears Reeves isn’t entirely shutting down the possibility. In the meantime, you can listen to our Batman retrospective podcast for even more of The Dark Knight.
