I know what you’re thinking. How can a speedrun of Super Mario Maker be even remotely fair when you don’t know what levels you’re going to get? There’d have to be tons of disparity between the completion times. Well, not exactly. Remember, Mario Maker levels have a length and object limit. Given that, the runners’ times are closer together than you’d think.

I encourage you to take a look at the 100 Mario Challenges to see what they’re doing, but for Speedrun Fast, we’re showing you three vids: the 2015 Nintendo World Championship courses, the event courses, and the Super Warp World courses. Let’s go in order.

The NWC was a special promotional event originating in 1990. In Super Mario Maker, it was brought back in the form of these courses the player could unlock within the game. Completing all of them allows players to shake a mushroom in the level builder to turn it into a weird mushroom (the one that makes Mario tall and lanky).

Missing a few of those event costumes for your Super Mario Maker amiibo costume collection? Just do exactly as Kishumen does and you won’t be missing them anymore. There’s even a course from the Nintendo World Championships 2017 in there.

What in Geno’s name is Super Warp World, you ask? It’s a series of 28 levels designed by the Super Mario Maker community to be playable and satisfying for players of all skill levels. SWW took months of work before it was ready, and it was unveiled with an amazing blind race by four competing speedrunners. You can see the world record here, but in honor of the creators’ hard work, here is that grand unveiling. It starts at 9:55.

I hope you’ve all been inspired to boot up your Wii U’s once more and those level creation juices flowing. While you’re at it, feel free to give all of my courses a star. And if you missed our featured Super Meat Boy run, just click that link.
