It takes the right tools to slay monsters. Looking runway-ready while you do it? That’s another story. Monster Hunter Wilds packs plenty of iconic looks. Instead of forcing you to wear unappealing armor for the stats, layered armor offers the best of both. How? By letting you use the stats of one armor set and the looks of another. With this system, Capcom has ensured that looking dapper will never cost you DPS. When you and your Palico are both dressed and equipped for anything, no monster can stop you. Here’s how to unlock layered armor in Monster Hunter Wilds.
MHW Layered Armor Guide

Hunter customization is a big part of what makes Monster Hunter Wilds great. Honing your hunter’s abilities takes quite the journey, and so does fashioning a fiercer style. Specifically, you’ll need to reach High Rank to unlock layered armor in Monster Hunter Wilds. That means finishing the campaign. It’s a tall task, but with your Palico pal and a few refreshing fishing breaks, it’s doable. Here’s what else you need to know:
- Crafting a piece of High Rank armor makes it available as layered armor
- To equip layered armor, head to your tent and access the Appearance Menu
- Navigate to “Equipment Appearance”
- Make your desired changes to customize your layered armor look
Separating an armor’s appearance from its abilities through layered armor and other transmog systems? That’s almost always a win because it grants you the freedom to express yourself without the fear of subpar stats. Just don’t forget to check on your crafting options when armor with better stats becomes available. We wouldn’t want fashion to limit your ferocity on the battlefield. That said, Wilds is forgiving enough that even if you’re all style, no strength, you’ll probably be fine. That’s what Palico paladins are for.
