Mercury Steam is Back With Blades of Fire; a New Fantasy Action Game That Isn’t Another Soulslike

A breath of fresh air

The creators of fan favorites like Metroid Dread and Castlevania: Lords of Shadows, Mercury Steam, are back after a prolonged hiatus with a brand new game, Blades of Fire. The new fantasy action game has you swinging swords, hammers, and all other sorts of objects that mean your enemies harm, but most importantly, it isn’t just another Soulslike. Most surprisingly, the release date of Blades of Fire is in May 2025, and you can already preorder it.

Although FromSoftware and others like Round 8 Studio have perfected the formula, it has been done to death, which is why games like the recently announced Ninja Gaiden 4 have players excited. Mercury Steam has gone a different route with this game. It doesn’t seem to have any of the typical dodge-and-swing systems that we’ve come to know and love.

Mercury Steam teased that the team was working on a new game, but no one could have guessed that an announcement and a release date was this close. Blades of Fire has you fill the shoes of Aran de Lira, who has the power to wield and use the hammer of the gods, which lets him make extremely powerful weapons, a major part of the game.

With this supercharged hammer, you can make all sorts of unique weapons to dish out damage to your enemies, their best friends, and the game’s biggest antagonist, Queen Nerea.

If you preorder Blades of Fire, you will get an Adventurer Pack with free goodies like the Iron Paladin Armor and Lord of Steel Attire, a Hammer Head for the Hyssop weapon, and extra forging materials that you can use to create powerful weapons early in the game.

The release date for Blades of Fire is May 22 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via the Epic Games Store.
