The Last of Us Showrunner Craig Mazin Gives Disappointing Update on Future of Franchise: ‘I’ll Just Say That Flat Out’

Is this the last of The Last of Us?

The Last of Us was and still is one of the most popular “zombie” games out there. However, that popularity has only grown thanks to MAX and their TV adaptation of the beloved Naughty Dog franchise. Despite the newfound popularity, co-showrunner Craig Mazin has made one thing very clear: he has no intentions of prolonging this series. Mazin seems to have a clear goal in mind, and while that may shorten the length of TLOU on MAX, it could strengthen the storytelling overall.

While Craig Mazin shares his position of showrunner with his old friend with whom he helped develop The Last Of Us games, Neil Druckmann is still by his side once again. Craig and Neil have kept the MAX series on the correct path, but also keep it a little fresh. This is an adaptation made for television. It will not and should not look exactly like the video game. However, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Mazin has already confirmed that the show will not go past the game. Craig then compared it to Game Of Thrones. The Game of Thrones TV series has gone way past the source material. The books that George R. R. Martin began writing are not even finished yet. Mazin then stated, “I’ll just say this flat out,” regarding his stance on the TV series not progressing farther than the games themselves.

The path so far.

Craig Mazin Breaks Some News Regarding the Future of the Last of Us Franchise

Mazin has also stated that TLOU is currently in its “Empire Strikes Back era.” Mazin understands that the second installment in any kind of media is one of the toughest. However, Craig and Neil seem pretty happy with what they have churned out in The Last Of Us Part 2. While the game did slightly divide the fanbase, for the most part, the community has remained pretty understanding of one another.

The Last of Us has a massive following of devoted fans, and the MAX series has only helped improve that. The show has opened the world of video games to a larger audience. New fans are falling in love with these characters like those who played the game did. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have worked to create an entire community that loves their storytelling. As season two of TLOU draws ever so close, fans worldwide are surely hyped to see other favorite characters back in action again, as the fireflies say, “When you’re lost in the darkness, look for the light.“
