Sony has raised the price of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition for the second time in several regions, including the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. The new pricing is effective immediately and is a pretty significant increase from the console’s original launch cost, and there’s nowhere but up from here.
In Europe, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition now costs €499.99 ($570), up €50 from its previous price of €449.99. The original launch price was €399.99, bringing the total increase since release to €100. In the UK, the console will now retail for £429.99 ($567), up £40 from the prior £389.99. At launch, it was priced at £359.99, meaning the total increase is now £70.
Australia and New Zealand are also seeing increases across both Digital and Standard PlayStation 5 models. In Australia, the Digital Edition is now priced at $749.95 AUD ($475), compared to $649.95 previously and $599.95 at launch. The Standard Edition has risen to $829.95 AUD, up from $799.95 and $749.95 before that.
Of course, Sony realizes that these price hikes are going to hit sales and reduce buying intent, and so, the price of the PS5 Disc Drive is being reduced in some regions. In the UK, the standalone disc drive will now cost £69.99, while in Europe it will be available for €79.99.
According to Isabelle Tomatis, vice president of global marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, the decision to raise prices was driven by economic challenges, including inflation and fluctuating exchange rates. Couple that with the tariffs, and this shouldn’t come as a shock. In a statement shared via the official PlayStation Blog, Tomatis said the updated recommended retail prices would apply to select markets in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
Sony noted that additional markets in the EMEA region may also be affected, though no specific countries were named. The US market has once again avoided a price hike, as it did during the last round of increases in August 2022. At that time, both the Digital and Standard editions of the PlayStation 5 saw higher prices across several countries, including Japan, Canada, and Mexico.
While the US hasn’t received a direct price increase, Sony did launch the Slim version of the PS5 Digital Edition in the region at a higher price point—$449—compared to the $399 launch price of the original model. And it is only a matter of time until Sony and Microsoft up the price of consoles in the US since only laptops, PCs, and smartphones are safe from tariffs, not gaming consoles.
