Machine Gun Kelly‘s music career is an interesting one, to say the least, and that’s not about to stop any time soon. The rapper-turned-pop singer has released a new single called “Clichรฉ,” and while some of his fans are praising MGK for the versatility, others can’t help but wonder what led to the increasingly dramatic genre shift, with some blaming Eminem.
For the record, MGK’s new song, Clichรฉ was released last week, and it features the singer presumably going out of his comfort zone even more, dancing, and singing a tune that you could confuse for a ’90s boy band revival. It’s currently one of the most trending songs on the internet for many reasons, and one of those reasons was discussed in a Reddit thread poking fun at MGK for a new shift in his image. Some have taken to calling him “Water Gun Kelly.”
As you can see, the new hit single has the 35-year-old MGK dancing in a carwash channeling his cutesy rizzler phase. It’s definitely a far cry from his old songs with notorious lyrics and harsh disses towards other rappers or even some of the more recent pop-punk tunes.
Hence, some fans are still pointing at Eminem as to why MGK is where he is right now. Back in September 2018, MGK notably released a song named “Rap Devil,” which is a direct diss or attack against Eminem. Eminem quickly responded in less than two weeks by releasing “Killshot,” which many believe ended MGK’s rap career.
How did Eminem “affect” MGK?
For many, “Killshot” rang true to its name for MGK as Eminem’s diss track retaliation highlighted the skill gap between the two rappers. In addition, Eminem simply had more fans and had a higher esteem in the music industry, with MGK’s career taking a big blow in reputation for even challenging a bigger and much older rapper.
Going further back, this rapper “beef” actually began way back in 2012 when the budding MGK tweeted about Eminem’s daughter, Hailie Jade, calling her “hot as f**k”. Eminem then made a blanket diss track called “Not Alike” in August 2018, hitting many rappers, MGK included, and the whole diss track exchange kicked off. MGK didn’t respond to Eminem’s “Killshot” and thereafter began trying his hand at other music genres.
Hence, fans and critics alike appear to be puzzled and are making fun of MGK right now, even though it wasn’t exactly clear why MGK switched into a less combative music genre. Despite the switch, however, MGK has seen much success, as some of his albums have topped the charts. It appears his critics say otherwise, though.
