A stadium full of fans sat waiting in Usher’s hometown while, according to sources, the two headliners argued backstage about whether to wait for them at all.
The Georgia showdown played out Thursday night behind the curtain of the R&B Tour, per TMZ, when Chris Brown and Usher reportedly clashed over when to start the show, and fans ended up waiting nearly three hours for it.
On paper, the setup sounds almost wholesome. Heavy traffic had stranded thousands of ticket holders outside, and the two stars, per TMZ’s sources, split on what to do. Chris Brown wanted to take the stage. Usher, playing his own hometown, wanted to hold for the crowd still stuck in the parking lots. The two “went back and forth,” and the show did not start until close to three hours after it was meant to.
Then came the part that turned a scheduling dispute into a story. Sources told TMZ the flare-up was about more than traffic: the pair have been “extremely competitive the entire tour,” the tension comes down to egos, and the problems between them have not been resolved.
The timing makes it sting. Announced in April, the tour has spent months filling stadiums from Chicago’s Soldier Field to Detroit’s Ford Field without a public crack. It was billed as the summit of two generations of the genre, and Atlanta was meant to be its crown jewel, with demand strong enough to push the run at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to a record five shows. Fans who paid stadium prices instead spent the night refreshing their phones.
It is not their first storm. In 2023, Usher stepped in to calm an argument at Chris Brown’s birthday party, a moment fans resurfaced all day as proof the friendship has always come with weather.
Neither star, nor any representative for either, has commented. Everything known about the backstage exchange comes from TMZ’s anonymous sources, and both men took the stage together that night, late but in full. They were booked to play Atlanta again the following night, and how that show went is the next test of whether the truce holds.
The Fans Paid for the Wait
The replies split between the headliners and the traffic. The best summary was a pun on Chris Brown’s own catalog: “So one said ‘Yeah 3x’ & the other said ‘Nah 3x’.” Team Chris kept it blunt: “Usher must have forgot that Chris can do stadiums ALONE.” The peacemakers saw both sides: “But this Usher city so I understand both sides. Hold it together fellas, the tour almost done!!” And one fan who says she was in that traffic disputed the clock entirely: “It wasnt 3hrs late. The ‘opening act’ was a dj… As one of the ppl stuck in traffic 2+hrs. Im thankful they waited.“
Two legends, one stage, and a clock neither of them would agree to share. The tour rolls on, and so, apparently, does the rivalry.
