The Nintendo Switch console has already sold 10 million worldwide before Christmas. This announcement has come just after The Game Awards last week in Los Angeles, where Super Mario Odyssey won the award for Best Family Game. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was honored with the awards for Game of the Year, Best Action/Adventure Game, and Best Game Direction.

Reggie Fils-Anime, Nintendo of America President and COO, spoke about why the Switch is so successful: “As you can see in people’s living rooms, on a plane or riding the subway, fans all over the world can enjoy playing Nintendo Switch wherever they go”

“The response from fans has been great, and we’re doing our very best to satisfy demand during the holiday shopping season.”

Nintendo claims that the portable console is widely popular amongst families as players can play it on the television as well as take it with them anywhere they wanted. This comes to no surprise as the console sold 10 million consoles as of December 12, 2017. The console shipped over 2.74 million units in the first month of its launch and became the fastest-selling home console ever in the company’s history.

Nintendo has high hopes for next year and they promise to continue their momentum of success over 2018. They will be releasing several new games such as Kirby Star Allies, Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, and a new game in the Yoshi franchise. As well as Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus from Bethesda, Mega Man 11 from Capcom, PROJECT OCTOPATH TRAVELER, which is a working title from Square Enix, Shovel Knight: King of Cards from Yacht Club Games, and Runner3 from Choice Provisions.

But Nintendo’s online services on the Switch will only remain free until the beginning of 2018, so to play online multiplayer on these titles it will cost console owners $20 per year.
