The most basic thing you would expect when you go to a restaurant is to have a nice meal and a great time. You don’t think that your experience would be terrible, especially if you were going to a well-known place. Sometimes, however, you might get disappointed. A Maryland Black pastor shared his experience at a South Carolina restaurant called Salt & Honey. The restaurant is supposedly quite popular, which encouraged the pastor and his wife to go there. His wife proceeded to order a steak, but when it came, it wasn’t cooked to her liking. This made the couple return the steak to the kitchen once again.
You would think that the chef would simply fix the steak and send it back. Instead, he sent the plate as it was and said that this is how it is supposed to be cooked. They told them that they just have to eat it, which isn’t the reaction you would expect from a popular restaurant. To make matters worse, the South Carolina restaurant’s owner went to the couple’s table and claimed that he had googled how a medium rare steak is supposed to look. According to him, it was looking exactly like it should be. When the pastor and his wife were still not satisfied, the owner simply told them that Black people weren’t welcome in his establishment. He also told them that they can leave and that they are barred from the restaurant as well. The whole situation is shameful.
People Reacting to the Racism at the South Carolina Restaurant
Unfortunately, a lot of the comments took the South Carolina restaurant’s side. They started attacking the Black pastor and thinking that his request was outrageous. “I was on his side for a minute and I remain on his side because the customer is always right in a restaurant and they do not deserve to be talked to as such, but how in the hell do you cook a medium well steak?” one person wrote. Thankfully, someone replied and said, “Look out, your racism is showing.” Another person claimed that the whole situation isn’t surprising because it’s usual to be treated this way at Myrtle Beach. “Myrtle Beach. Yup, checks out. I’ve been to so many places across the South, from bum-f**k towns to hidden gem locations, but I’ve never felt more unwelcomed until I visted Myrtle Beach. People glance at you like you owe them money,” they wrote.
Someone else shared the same opinion as they said, “I’ve never heard good things about that place.” Another person claimed that the returned steak had been tampered with. “Uh y’all worried about how the steak was cooked but do you realize they took that steak in the back and then brought that same steak out to them again? In a place that hates black people? Dude could’ve wiped his nuts or worse on that steak. It should’ve never made it back to the table like that. Holy health department,” they wrote. I hope this isn’t the case because ew. It turns out that it’s not surprising at all that this racist encounter happened. “It’s South Carolina a state that has a huge Confederate flag flying right before you get to the North Carolina border,” one Redditor wrote. It’s unfortunate that Black people still find themselves in these kinds of situations.
