Violence isn’t the solution

As the new school year kicked off in New York, a fight between two students quickly turned into something far more serious when a parent got involved. Fourteen-year-old Madison Evans said an argument with a 15-year-old classmate escalated after she was punched in the face, leading her to hit back. What should have ended there took a shocking turn when the other girl’s mother, 35-year-old Toni Monroe, joined the altercation and struck Evans on the head with a Stanley Cup tumbler. Evans recalled being beaten, shoved back into the school building, and realizing blood was dripping from her head, leaving the incident to end not just in bruises but also in assault charges.

In the video filmed of the attack, you can see a security officer there. Honestly, the officer didn’t seem to be doing anything useful to stop the fight. Monroe was later arrested though. She was charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child. According to the New York mother and her attorney, she only started attacking Evans because she was bullying her daughter. Even if the girl was a bully, that shouldn’t justify physical violence. The mother could have confronted her without escalating the situation. Due to the bullying claims, she pleaded not guilty. She was also released on a GPS monitor, and she had to sign a stay-away order of protection.

Bullying is never okay, but this situation could have ended terribly. A Stanley Cup is enough to cause a lot of damage. It left Evans with 17 stitches, which is quite a lot. “She could have died,” her mother said. The alleged bully also told the press how her injury hurts all the time and that she can’t do my hair. This made some people point out that her hair was done despite this. This contradiction only made more people side with the New York mother, especially since bullying was involved.

People Reacting to the New York Fight

Surprisingly, a lot of people sided with the furious New York mother. They believed that bullies deserve whatever comes their way. This made one woman write, “I’m on moms side. People dont play about their kids and bullies.” One person then said, “I support the mother stop bullying.” Others also tried to justify the attack as another woman wrote, “so she bullied a girl and her mom had her daughters back.” Evans received a lot of criticism as well. Several people claimed that she shouldn’t be acting like she is the victim in this situation. “Bullies usually play the victim,” one person wrote. Someone else said, “The bully got checked and now she’s the victim.” One TikTok user also pointed out a contradiction in Evans’ words. “i tried to do my hair couldn’t do it *has laid edges all around*,” they wrote. That’s a good point.

The support for the New York mother didn’t stop. “Schools don’t do anything about bullying tho,” one person wrote. Someone else who wasn’t from America was shocked by what happened. “what do yall be doin in America?” they questioned. There were some people, though, who sided with Evans and blamed the mother for how she acted. “why is her mom fighting for her? Lmk,” someone wondered. Another person also asked in disbelief, “What do you mean she pleaded not guilty?!? Did you not see when she started swinging that Stanley cup?!?!” One TikTok user said, “Honestly, I get bullying is bad because I was bullied myself. But an adult AND a mother attacking a literal CHILD is immature. She’s 35. She could have handled it better. She could have confronted her, sure. But attack a child? No. Immature asf.” The bullying and the attack should never have happened.
