For nearly three decades, the so-called ‘console war’ has been gaming’s most stubborn drama. Xbox vs PlayStation, green vs blue, Phil Spencer vs Jim Ryan. It’s the kind of tribalism that fueled forums, flame wars, and endless social media disputes. But the moment Helldivers 2 drops on Xbox, with Gears of War: Reloaded landing on PS5 on the same day, the curtain finally closes.

Helldivers 2 is the perfect symbol for this shift. Launched as a surprise live-service breakout for the PS5, it quickly became one of 2024’s biggest co-op hits. Sure, PlayStation has already dipped its toes in PC with PS Now and several first-party ports. But the fact that Helldivers 2 crosses over to Xbox this year sends shockwaves across the industry.

What makes jaws drop is how far PlayStation is willing to go, according to the developers themselves. “It was all PlayStation. Send them your thanks!” said Arrowhead Studios CEO Shams Jorjani. This effort leads to a full Halo-themed battle pass: ODST armor, the iconic MA5C assault rifle, and Warthog-inspired skins.

Meanwhile, Gears of War: Reloaded opened its closed beta across all platforms it’s available on. The June 13-15 and June 20-22 test weekends even welcomed PS5 players who had preordered the game.

This kind of cooperation would’ve been unthinkable during the PS3 vs Xbox 360 generation, when exclusives were everything. Nevertheless, the industry has changed, and like it or not, both parties have to adapt fast.

The cost of developing AAA blockbusters has ballooned past triple-digit millions; even costing billions, in the case of Grand Theft Auto 6. Now PlayStation and Microsoft are realizing that ecosystems — not boxes — pay the bills. Services like Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Premium rely on engagement numbers, instead of loss-lead hardware sales.

Helldivers 2 on Xbox and Gears on PlayStation isn’t just a simple cross-platform marketing. It’s the end of a decades-long rivalry. Sure, Sony and Microsoft will still compete for your time and your money through subscriptions and cross-media content. But at the very least, if Halo armor can show up in a Sony-funded games, the idea of ‘console exclusivity’ is definitely already six feet under.

The console war between Xbox and PlayStation has dragged on longer than it should’ve, but the market finally made the decision for them. With Helldivers 2 marching onto Xbox and Gears of War: Reloaded breaking down exclusivity walls, August 26 isn’t just another release date. It’s the day all gamers should mark as the end of an era and the start of gaming’s new chapter.
