Getting to the top as a superstar isn’t easy, so it’ll obviously get under your skin seeing someone else copying your style and getting more recognition for it. That said, Miley Cyrus seemingly throws at Taylor Swift during a recent interview with Pamela Anderson. The two have known each other for years, with many feeling like Miley has always had a ‘one-sided beef and jealousy’ with Travis Kelce’s fiancée.
And while the “Flowers” songwriter did publicly come out by telling the Mirror she congratulated Swift and Kelce for their engagement, calling them the “absolute cutest couple.” However, during her recent chat with Pamela Anderson, documented by CR, fans were quick to point out the Plastic Hearts singer’s clear grudge against her old-time rival. The shade was allegedly thrown when Miley spoke about the evolving concept of being a showgirl:
“When I did this shoot for CR, it was before the idea of a showgirl became cultural in the way it is now. There’s a real conversation happening—and a new breath being exhaled—into what a showgirl is. Real kind of showgirlship is more than bedazzled bras, feathers, and makeup.”

Fans Accuse Miley Cyrus “Gatekeeping” Taylor Swift From Being a Showgirl
“She is trying to shade Taylor because she did it first,” remarked a commenter, pointing out how Miley isn’t original since Moulin Rouge and the Lady Marmalade were doing the same over 20 years ago. Another added that the way the Hannah Montana actress worded her statement felt awfully shady, “like she’s annoyed at the idea that Taylor Swift is doing a showgirl aesthetic at all.” Hundreds agreed, saying that Miley is just trying to “gatekeep” the concept.
Plenty of others claim they agree with what Miley was saying, but they felt like “she’s saying it for all the wrong reasons.” A top-upvoted comment on Reddit pointed out how the concept of showgirls has had a cultural presence for well over a century. “Like Jojo Siwa inventing gay pop [is] wild,” someone said in comparison. Another added that it’s the ‘child star symptom’ of being praised too much by one’s Hollywood managers. “Miley Cyrus grew up hearing from friend-managers that she was the next coming of Christ and the sun shone out of her *ss.”
Celebrities wanting all the glory and recognition for a certain kind of concept isn’t new, as every star or idol wants to feel like they’re unique. But fans agree that this sort of gatekeeping is pretty unnecessary, “Especially when it’s an aesthetic that’s been around and interpreted for like 100+ years already,” as one user adds. “It comes off like she is pissed T.S became the bigger name. It’s just childish,” chimed in another. Whether it’s Jojo Siwa, Taylor Swift, or anyone else accused of copying another pop star, some form of jealousy is bound to rear its ugly head.
